What is Mozzies

The Mongolia Australia Society is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation established in 1998.

The Society’s mission is to promote cooperation and friendship between Mongolia and Australia. This is achieved by strengthening the warm people-to-people and institutional links between the two countries.

The Society is affectionately known as the “Mozzies Association” in honour of its core group of members - the Mongolian Aussies (Mozzies) - who have lived, worked or studied in Australia.

Our history

The Mongolia Australia Society aims to • Serve as a network of Mongolian alumni of Australian universities, nurturing personal and professional links between members and encouraging the sharing of skills and knowledge • Celebrate the long-term friendship and ongoing cultural link with Australia, keeping it alive through a diverse program of activities, such as events to commemorate Australia Day, Melbourne Cup and the Australian Open • Share news, information and resources with its members and the wider Mongolia-Australia community through its website, newsletter and email updates • Act as an ambassador for Australia in Mongolia, and actively promote cooperation between the two countries, especially by maintaining a close relationship with Australian institutions • Promote the various Australian scholarship options available to Mongolian students, and support applicants and returned students to Mongolia • Undertake targeted projects that contribute to the development of the Mongolia-Australia relationship, as well as the development of both societies

Structure

The main governing body of the Society is the Board, which is made up of 24 members, including the President and Executive Director. The Board meets on a quarterly basis and provides hands-on support to guide the Society’s activities. The President of the Society, Mr D Tsogtbaatar, is also a Member of the Parliament of Mongolia. As a graduate of the University of Sydney in 1997, he was one of the first Mozzies and is also one of the most successful. The Executive Director of the Society is Ms R Altangerel. As a graduate of Australian National University and Project Director of MERIT, she is appointed by the Board to manage the day-to-day activities of the Society. The Society is also made up of four committees, which work to achieve the organisation’s objectives: • Social activities committee • Membership committee • Foreign Relations Committee • Committee for working with the Australian community The Society currently boasts a membership of over 170 individuals. Many have benefited from scholarship programs to study at Australian universities, such as the AusAID-funded Australian Development Scholarships and Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships. Family members of Mozzies are also an important part of the organization.
